The Gap Between Success and Failure is Smaller Than You Think

At times, it seems like we are destined to fail. The obstacles in between us and success are too big, and there’s nothing we can do about it.

But, that isn’t the case at all.

Many times, the reason why you didn’t get into that certain school or didn’t get that certain job is because you didn’t put forth enough effort. But, I’m not talking about the kind of effort it takes to run a marathon or swim the English Channel. I’m talking about tiny amounts of effort.

The world is full of average people putting forth average amounts of effort, and all it takes to stand out is a few extra minutes, or even a few extra seconds.

For example, let’s take two job candidates that are applying for the same position. Both have similar backgrounds and are equally qualified for the job.

Candidate 1 gets up that morning 15 minutes earlier than usual. He spends an extra minute or two shaving, lint rolls his suit on the way out the door, and stops by Starbucks to get his morning coffee. He arrives at the interview five minutes before he needed to arrive, so he finishes his coffee while he does a Google search on the company to see if there’s anything else he could use during the interview. Turns out that there was some breaking news early that morning about a new product that was rolling out. He then heads into the interview, tossing his coffee in the trash on the way in.

Candidate 2 gets up at his usual time. He showers and shaves, and then rushes out the door so that he has time to stop by Starbucks. He arrives at the interview just in time, and heads in. His suit has lint and dog hair all over it, but he hadn’t noticed. He also missed a spot shaving. He heads into the interview, coffee cup in hand.

Now, which candidate do you think will get that job?

Without a doubt Candidate 1 gets the job, and all it took was fifteen extra minutes of effort.

Even though I knew Elliott Smith outside of the industry, I feel lucky to have recorded one of our conversations for a feature that ran in the October 1998 issue of Alternative Press and later appeared in my book. It’s a day that’s been etched into record, whose words I don’t need to paraphrase. There are pictures from that day for when my memory fails me, so I can actually tell you what Elliott was wearing: a black t-shirt, blue jeans, black socks, and a thick-soled brown shoe. (It was a humid day in Brooklyn, so no, he was not wearing a stocking cap.) There are even notes: He lived five flights up in a Park Slope tenement building, back when Fourth Avenue was where you went to change your tires, not change your life. It was considerably warm outside, so we sat in his living room — away from the windows — and drank from ice cold Coke cans. When the interview was over, we talked about Ry Cooder and Poison Idea and that time people started yelling for Elliott’s solo songs at a Heatmiser show I saw at the Mercury Lounge. He was mortified by that.

I don’t have anything like this for any of my other friends who have died. The memories of them, sooner or later, begin to fragment, blur, and blend into each other; a holistic picture emerges, but the singularity comes at the cost of specificity. I’ve written about some of my memories of Elliott before — see here, here, and especially here — but today, on the eighth anniversary of Elliott’s death, I choose to think about the one day we spent together that’s been preserved and the words we recorded.

“I just don’t want to fuck up and get confused to the point where I’m not so close to the thing that made me play music in the first place,” he told me. “The less I think about this stuff, the happier I am.”

I remember that day the most because we both seemed genuinely happy.

The Lions Mane Jellyfish is the largest jellyfish in the world. They have been swimming in arctic waters since before the dinosaurs (over 650 million years ago) and are among some of the oldest surviving species in the world.

The largest can come in at about 6 meters and has tentacles over 50 meters long. Pretty amazing when you think these things have been swimming around for so long.

They have hundreds of poisonous tentacles that it used to catch passing by fish. it then slowly drags in it’s prey and eats it.

That is terrifying.

They also frequently ask me if I think I will see him again. Carl faced his death with unflagging courage & never sought refuge in illusions. But, the great thing is that when we were together, for nearly twenty years, we lived with a vivid appreciation of how brief & precious life is. We knew we were beneficiaries of chance… That pure chance could be so generous & so kind… That we could find each other, as Carl wrote so beautifully in Cosmos, you know, in the vastness of space & the immensity of time… That we could be together for twenty years. That is something which sustains me & it’s much more meaningful…

The way he treated me & the way I treated him, the way we took care of each other & our family, while he lived. That is so much more important than the idea I will see him someday. I don’t think I’ll ever see Carl again. But I saw him. We saw each other. We found each other in the cosmos, and that was wonderful.“

Douglas Adams and me, October 1983, back when I was a 22-year old Journalist. This was a test Polaroid that Henry the photographer gave me, taken while he was testing shots. I’m glad I still have it.

(This was back when I wore colourful clothes and also back when I smoked. And I wore tinted glasses because I thought they made me look older.)

Douglas is playing Marvin the Paranoid Android’s “How I Hate The Night” song on the guitar, but you can no longer hear him singing. It was too long ago.
